Metal Mouth

Birkely got her braces put on last week. She was beyond excited. Not a bit nervous or daunted by the extra care that will be involved. She has been asking for them for over a year...since she found out about their existence.

While she was sitting there having her cheeks pulled apart and having things fitted and glued, my thoughts were about how this is going to be two years of juggling work and school with all these appointments, paying for the two teeth she has to have pulled in the next couple of weeks to keep the timeline intact and, not to mention, how much this whole process costs. Then I looked at her. She was lying in the chair, holding a mirror and just staring at her mouth. She was in her own little world. I can't know exactly what she was thinking, but I have to wonder if she was thinking of the marvel of this. How such a thing was so far from the realm of possibility (or even imagination) 2 and a half years ago.

I have seen that look before. The first time she saw a computer, the first time she rode a roller coaster, the first Christmas...it was that look of wonder that I haven't seen in a long time.

I hope she is always able to find things of wonder.

Yes, welcome to the bonds of parenthood. All the fears and worries of the unknown and the sheer joy of tiny little glimmers of joy that make it worth the journey.

Ohhh braces...*shudder* I had a horrible and unethical orthodontist- I had them for 8 years (8!) and I still have TMJ. My teeth weren't even that crooked to begin with....

LOL I'm sure you guys are in way better hands.
